We all have a longing to know and to be known. Martin Buber once said, “When two people relate to one another authentically and humanly, God is the electricity that surges between them.” Regardless of faith, creed or religion these words are true for all of us. Our desire for connection is what drives our thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Spiritual abuse takes advantage of our need for healthy connection and violates our dignity and inner peace.

It occurs when those in positions of religious authority and power use God or any other spiritual teaching to control, manipulate and actively dehumanize those in their care.

Unfortunately, this is a common problem that occurs in treatment and as therapists we should be equipped to handle what comes next. Having been raised in the church and with previous experience working in ministry before becoming a therapist, I know this all too well.
